Ponniyin Selvan not dropped!

There were reports that Ponniyin Selvan was dropped because Mani Ratnam felt that it is not financially viable. Then it was said that he will move over to a romantic flick and this film will mark the debut of Karthik’s son Gautham.

But now sources close to the director say that Ponniyin Selvan has not been dropped but has been shelved. The ace director has plans to revive Ponniyin Selvan soon after he completes the romantic flick, source report. So, we can expect Ponniyin Selvan after all!

THE REAL REASON BEHIND PONNIYIN SELVAN DROP..

Director Maniratnam reveals that, higher budget cost and others are not the real reason for Ponniyin Selvan's drop. He states that, the story & copyrights of the film can't be registered in the film council as it is a public reference book. It is also revealed that Super Star Rajnikanth's historic venture 'Rana' also include some of the major scenarios and twists from the same story.

Mani plans a mass film

Now that it has been almost confirmed that Mani Ratnam has dropped his magnum opus project based on Kalki’s ‘Ponniyin Selvan’, we hear that the director would start a fresh film, that too at the earliest.

“This one would be a contemporary entertainer with mass elements, quite on the lines of the ace filmmaker’s earlier ventures Agni Natchathiram, Nayagan and Thalapathi,” say sources in the know.

A popular actor will play the lead role, they say and add: “As in the past, Mani Ratnam may not make an official announcement on this project too till he completes considerable part of the shoot.”

“Will the protagonist be Vijay, who has been roped in by Mani for Ponniyin Selvan?” To this question, the sources say: “Though there is a possibility for it, the director has to take the final call.”

Mani Ratnam's "Ponniyin Selvan" Movie Updates

Mani Ratnam has already started work on his magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan, the screen adaptation of Amarar Kalki’s timeless classic novel Ponniyin Selvan. The story is set in the Chola Empire during the 10th century. Word has it that Mani has roped in big stars like Ilaya Thalapathy Vijay, Arya... and Anushka for the Tamil film and Tollywood star Mahesh Babu for the Telugu version.

When Vijay was asked how he was preparing for his debut in a period drama, he gave an evasive reply, “I can’t speak about it. Let the announcement come from the producer’s side.”

There is an unconfirmed rumour that Mani might drop the project since he’s finding it an uphill task getting an investor for the whopping budget of the movie.

It's Vijay and Ram Charan Teja!

Kollywood is abuzz with news that Mahesh Babu has moved out of Ponniyin Selvan. The news now is that director Mani Ratnam has decided to replace him with Ram Charan Teja. The director was so impressed with Ram Charan Teja’s performance in Magadheera and so he decided on casting him for the role. It is also said that Priyanka Chopra, who was supposed to play the female lead, has backed off.

As of now, Vijay and Ram Charan Teja have been confirmed to play the lead roles in this movie which is based on the popular novel Ponniyin Selvan.

Has Mani Ratnam shelved his dream project Ponniyin Selvan?

The Kollywood grapevine is abuzz that the project has been put on the backburner!

It's strongly rumoured that the  lead actors Vijay, Mahesh Babu, Arya, Anushka have been informed that they can "de-freeze", their dates allotted for the film.

The shoot of the film was to start in October.

Madras Talkies the producers of the film have been hunting around for a big corporate production house to fund the project which will cost Rs 100 Cr plus.

They were in talks with UTV, Sun Pictures and Eros, but nothing seems to have come out of it.

However, Madras Talkies have so far officially not announced the project, so there need not be any clarification regarding it.

Mani Ratnam has worked six months on the script of the film, and it is his pet project, something he will not give up easily.

At the moment Mani is holidaying abroad and a final decision may be taken once he comes back in the first week of May.

Rumormongers in Kollywood say that Ponniyin Selvan may be dropped. Though the reason for this is not out, the rumors are getting strong day by day. At a stage when all the actors and actresses were said to be finalized, this comes as surprise to many. Mani Ratnam intends to make Ponniyin Selvan in three languages – Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. Since this film requires a huge star cast, Mani is planning to cast at least one popular face from each film industry, sources report. While for the Tamil version it will be Vijay, for Telugu it is Mahesh Babu.
Having offered the two important male lead roles to the most popular stars in the Tamil and Telugu film industry, sources say that the director feels that Priyanka Chopra would be the apt choice to appease the Bollywood audiences. Apparently, the Raavan director plans to cast her in Veerudu, a Tamil period flick.

A source confirms that Mani's people want to meet PC, but she's unable to commit because of time constraints.

Doing justice

The source offers details, "Ratnam's period film is set in 1500 BC and he feels that the Saat Khoon Maaf actress would be able to do justice to the character."

A source close to Priyanka confirms that she's quite kicked about the offer. "She plans to meet to him personally as soon as possible. This would be her first Tamil film, and it's believed to have a huge budget allocated to build huge sets and also use some exciting SFX."

The project will also feature south actors Vijay, Mahesh Babu and Arya and Anushka Shetty.

Hope it is not the fate of Ratnam's last offering Raavan that is making PC not find time for the veteran director.

The film is based on a Tamil novel Ponniyin Selvan and tells the story of the courageous warrior Vallavarayan Vandiyatheyan and King Aditha Karikalan which will be played by Vijay and Mahesh Babu. Anushka will play Vijay and Mahesh Babu's younger sister.

The Mani Ratnam-AR Rahman combination in the film industry has resulted in some magical music. The duo has come together once again for Ponniyin Selvan. The cast is yet to be finalized but AR Rahman, determined to do his best for Mani, has already completed five songs.
